Google Maps is set to enhance its functionality with new features driven by Gemini, Google’s generative AI model. Announced on October 31, these updates aim to assist U.S. users in discovering new places and answering queries about various locations.
Among the improvements are upgraded navigation tools that will guide drivers more effectively, indicating the correct lanes and other essential road details. By integrating Gemini into Google Maps, the tech giant aims to strengthen its position against competitors like Apple Maps and emerging navigation apps.
The AI enhancements will allow users to ask Google Maps for suggestions on activities or places to visit. For example, a user might inquire about “things to do with friends at night,” prompting Gemini to provide a curated selection of options, such as nearby speakeasies or live music venues. Users can also access brief summaries of locations and pose specific follow-up questions, like whether a venue offers outdoor seating.
These new features will be available on both Android and iOS platforms in the United States, with Google planning to extend similar functionalities to its Search service, including AI-generated review summaries and location inquiries.
For drivers, the updated navigation capabilities will make it easier to navigate complex roadways with multiple lanes, exits, and intersections. Google Maps will clearly display lanes, crosswalks, and road signs, ensuring users know exactly which lane to be in, reducing last-minute merges.
The app will also facilitate exploration of attractions and dining options along the driving route. Upon entering a destination, users will see nearby landmarks and popular spots. Once at the destination, Google Maps will help locate parking and remind users to save their parking spot. It will also provide walking directions from the parking area to the entrance, with options for Street View and augmented reality (AR) navigation.
Additionally, users will be able to report weather-related road issues, such as flooding or low visibility.
Google has also announced an expansion of the Immersive View feature, which creates 3D models of destinations, to 150 cities worldwide, including new launches in Brussels, Kyoto, and Frankfurt.
These updates signify a significant advancement for Google Maps, enhancing its usability for both daily activities and special occasions.
