Combining immediate support and long-term innovation, Google launched a field guide to help mental health professionals use AI responsibly and partnered with DeepMind and Wellcome Trust to develop AI-powered treatments for complex conditions like anxiety, depression, and psychosis
Google has announced the launch of two major artificial intelligence (AI) initiatives aimed at tackling the global mental health crisis, with a particular focus on improving treatment and expanding access in underserved regions.
The first initiative involves the release of a practical field guide tailored for mental health organisations. Developed in collaboration with Grand Challenges Canada and McKinsey Health Institute, the guide offers actionable insights into responsibly integrating AI into mental health care delivery. It highlights real-world applications, such as clinician training, personalised care, and streamlining workflows, while also addressing ethical concerns like data privacy and safe AI deployment.
The second effort sees a strategic partnership between Google for Health, Google DeepMind, and the Wellcome Trust to fund multi-year research into AI-driven treatments. This initiative is aimed at creating more precise, personalised methods for diagnosing and treating complex conditions such as anxiety, depression, and psychosis. The collaboration includes financial support from the Wellcome Trust and is expected to explore innovations in therapeutic interventions, including the development of novel medications.
Dr Megan Jones Bell, Clinical Director for Consumer and Mental Health at Google, emphasized the broader vision: “By exploring AI’s role in both immediate support and long-term therapeutic advancement, we aim to help more people worldwide get the care they need.”
Google’s dual-track strategy—combining tools for present-day clinical support with long-term scientific research—seeks to bridge the mental health treatment gap, especially in low- and middle-income countries where access remains a significant challenge. These initiatives mark a significant step in using AI not just as a technological breakthrough but as a potential lifeline for mental health care across the globe.
