Meta has acquired Netherlands-based 3D smart glass maker Luxexcel in an undisclosed amount, doubling down on its metaverse dream in 2023. Apparently, both the companies had already worked together on Project Aria, Meta’s augmented reality (AR) research initiative.
With Luxexcel, Meta will leverage its experience in building prescription glasses for AR eyewear. The company said, “We’re excited that the Luxexcel team has joined Meta, deepening the existing partnership between the two companies.”
Luxexcel can integrate the elements needed to create an AR experience within a prescription lens, such as holographic film and projectors. Luxexcel’s 3D printed prescription lenses can be used inside AR glasses. Recently, the company has focused its efforts on smart lenses, which can be printed with integrated technology like LCD displays and holographic film.
In 2021, Meta collaborated with Essilor Luxottica to launch Ray Ban branded smart eyeglasses called Ray Ban Stories. The glasses allowed users to listen to music, take photos, calls and short videos to share on Facebook using a companion app.
