World Password Day comes around every year on the first Thursday of May and is the perfect time to remind everyone about the importance of having a secure password for all your online accounts. The UK's National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) revealed that 23 million people worldwide were using the password "123456" proving that many are still unaware of the increasing risks. In 2022 the importance of having a strong password cannot be overstated with the number of apps and services an individual uses growing by the day.
Not to mention the fact that many businesses are now allowing their employees to connect to the corporate network on personal devices to offer higher flexibility.
As a result, these devices act as a gateway, meaning that opportunistic hackers can take advantage of a vulnerable endpoint to steal both personal and professional confidential data stored on the broader company infrastructure. Every day, cybercriminals attempt to steal the passwords of hundreds of users, utilizing techniques such as phishing emails to enable them to breach thousands of services and to steal credentials. While the methods continue to change, and the threats continue to evolve, there are still ways we can keep our data protected.
By using World Password Day, as an opportunity to reevaluate the strength of our passwords and to bolster up our cybersecurity efforts, individuals can deter cybercriminals from getting access to their information and their devices.
As enterprises continue with hybrid work models, the resulting digital transformation will put Cloud adoption at the forefront. This equates to greater emphasis on data and asset confidentiality in multiple spaces. Strong identity management will be essential to prevent breaches. Without robust Identity & Access Management (IAM) policies in place, even the most advanced tools in the security stack will not be enough to comprehensively secure the enterprise.
A bold statement is your cybersecurity implementation is only as strong as the weakest link. Don't let a weak password be that weakest link. Setting a strong password and implementing Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)are essentials of a cybersecurity practice. A report says, nearly all cloud identities (99%) are overly permissive, and many grant permissions that are never used and 53% of cloud accounts allow weak password usage (<12 characters) – 44% allow password reuse, whereas, 62% of organisations have publicly exposed cloud resources.
Organisations struggle to put good governance in place, opening the door for malicious actors to have wider access to cloud environments. This has given rise to Cloud Threat Actors, i.e., individuals or groups that threaten organisations through directed and sustained access to their cloud platform resources, services, or embedded metadata.
