In its “12 Days of OpenAI” announcements, OpenAI, supported by Microsoft, revealed that the ChatGPT Search feature is now being made available to free-tier users. After initially testing the feature under the name "SearchGPT" and launching it for paid subscribers last month, OpenAI has now expanded access to anyone with an OpenAI account, regardless of whether they have a subscription.
Taking on Google, the Search feature integrates real-time web search capabilities within ChatGPT, combining the power of natural language processing with live updates on news, sports scores, stock quotes, and more. This allows users to ask questions and receive up-to-date answers with a conversational tone. The feature also allows users to follow up with related questions, using ChatGPT’s contextual awareness to refine responses.
Users can initiate a web search either automatically, based on their query, or manually by clicking the search icon. The results are presented in a visually updated interface, showing source links and displaying information such as weather, sports scores, stock updates, and news.
In addition to the launch of the Search feature, OpenAI has introduced several other updates during the “12 Days of OpenAI,” including:
ChatGPT Pro Plan: A new subscription offering advanced features and access to all AI models, designed for users who need enhanced functionality.
O1-Series Models: OpenAI has rolled out the O1-series models, designed to improve ChatGPT’s reasoning ability and performance. Pro users also get access to O1 Turbo mode, which provides faster responses.
Sora Model: The Sora model allows premium users to generate 1080p videos (up to 20 seconds long) using inputs like text, photos, and videos, a useful tool for content creation.
Reinforcement Fine-Tuning Research Program: OpenAI has expanded its program, enabling developers to fine-tune AI models for specific applications, improving customization and efficiency.
ChatGPT Canvas: The new Canvas interface transforms ChatGPT into a collaborative workspace, offering inline suggestions and feedback on projects.
Apple Integration: OpenAI partnered with Apple to integrate ChatGPT with Apple’s Writing Tools and Siri, enabling more complex task management and content creation on Apple devices.
Santa Voice Option: A festive, limited-time "Santa" voice option has been added to ChatGPT, allowing users to interact with the AI in a playful Santa-inspired voice.
ChatGPT Projects: Users can now create "projects" within ChatGPT, grouping chats on specific topics for easier access, and also upload files or save customized instructions.
These updates reflect OpenAI's focus on continuously enhancing the user and developer experience within its AI-driven ecosystem.
