As AI redefines digital workflows, the browser wars are no longer about speed and tabs — they’re about intelligence, context, and control.
The battle for the web browser market is heating up as two AI powerhouses — Perplexity AI and OpenAI — step into the ring to challenge Google Chrome’s dominance with innovative AI-driven browsers designed to revolutionize how users interact with the internet.
Comet: The First AI Chat-Powered Browser
Comet: The First AI Chat-Powered Browser
Perplexity AI, backed by major investors including Jeff Bezos, Nvidia, and SoftBank, has officially launched Comet, a revolutionary AI-powered browser. Unlike traditional browsers, Comet offers a chat-based interface, enabling users to complete complex online tasks — from summarizing articles and comparing products to scheduling meetings — all without manually navigating websites.

Comet is currently available exclusively to users of Perplexity’s $200/month premium subscription, with broader access expected via invite-only rollouts later this summer.
The company claims Comet does not use personal data for AI training and stores most information locally, appealing to users concerned about online privacy. However, Comet faces backlash from media outlets like Forbes, Wired, and The Wall Street Journal, which accuse the platform of using content without permission. In response, Perplexity has pledged to collaborate more transparently with publishers.
OpenAI’s Chromium-Based Browser to Launch Soon
Meanwhile, OpenAI — the creator of ChatGPT — is preparing to unveil its own AI-powered browser, according to Reuters. Built on the Chromium engine, the new browser will offer a chat-centric interface, allowing users to complete tasks like form-filling, reservations, and content discovery without leaving the window.
This browser is part of OpenAI’s broader vision to integrate its AI into everyday internet use, potentially transforming how people browse, shop, and interact online.
Google Chrome currently controls over 65% of the global browser market, powering Google's massive advertising empire. With Perplexity and OpenAI entering the space, there's a significant opportunity to reshape web browsing by offering privacy-first, AI-enhanced alternatives.
