The worst technology trends of 2018!
2018-12-04
For many, 2018 has been a year to forget, From anxiety-inducing social networks and buggy cell units to glitchy working programs and killer driverless vehicles, we had all of it. And we're betting a lot of companies who made this year's list of tech fails similarly hope you'll forgive and forget these duds. We're not talking just about products that flopped or had serious bugs, but rather the worst data breach of all time. This 12 months was once tough for the era trade. From anxiety-inducing social networks and buggy cell units to glitchy working programs and killer driverless vehicles, we had all of it.
In the spirit of the season, however, we won't single out any individuals here. Instead, we'll focus on the products and trends that made us sick. And here is to having a look ahead to a greater new 12 months in 2019.
FACEBOOK: LICKED SECURITY & UNETHICAL TREND
Social media companies, most notably Facebook, have faced a reckoning in the past year, with reports surfacing about an infiltration of Russian propaganda to influence elections, misuse user data, and countless other examples of the platform being used for ill. As a society, we're starting to lose faith in our technology icons, especially in light of the questionable decisions made by the once-beloved Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, and reports about early Facebook employees who got rich and now have the luxury of preventing their own kids from using social media.
#DeleteFacebook, once unthinkable, is now a very real trend. And it poses a growing threat to Facebook's bottom line, and its future. Facebook–Cambridge Analytica data scandal was a major political scandal in early 2018 when it was revealed that #Cambridge-Analytica had harvested the personal data of millions of people's Facebook profiles without their consent and used it for political purposes. It has been described as a watershed moment in the public understanding of personal data and precipitated a massive fall in Facebook's stock price and calls for tighter regulation of tech companies' use of data.

TWITTER: SCORED AS MOST HATED
Twitter has been under fire for allowing actual Nazis and white supremacists to tweet with impunity and had been permitting racist and conspiracist agitators such Alex Jones and well as the President of the US to thrive on its service. Twitter permanently suspended @realalexjones and @infowars from Twitter and Periscope in early September, later than many other tech companies such as Apple and Facebook. It said it based that action in reports of tweets and videos that violated its policy against abusive behavior. The ban underscored the difficulty many social-media services face in trying to consistently apply their rules against harassment and other bad behavior. It was also likely from the start that Jones and his supporters would find ways to get around Twitter's ban by setting up new accounts or posting from existing accounts that were not part of the initial purge.

GOOGLE PROJECT DRAGONFLY: MORAL & ETHICAL CRICIS
Google experienced a “moral and ethical” crisis. That’s the view of hundreds of employees at the tech company, who were protesting the development of a censored search engine for internet users in China.
About 1,400 Google employees - out of the more than 88,000 - signed a letter to company executives this week, seeking more details and transparency about the project and demanding employee input in decisions about what kind of work Google takes on. They also expressed concern that the company is violating its own ethical principles. Google tried to keep it secret, but its secret program to cooperate with the Chinese government to create a censored search engine has really made the company look awfully bad and has prompted walk-outs, protests, and high-profile resignations.
A recent disclosure of the company's involvement in a Department of Defense project to develop computer vision systems for warfare has put the company under tremendous ethical scrutiny.
GOOGLE+: WE EXPOSED YOUR DATA, WE'RE CLOSING UP SHOP
Google's social platform, which was never really able to galvanize its user base like Facebook or Twitter since launching in June 2011, had been in the doldrums since its former head of social, Vic Gundotra, went off to become CEO of connected medical devices company AliveCor. Google finally decided to put it out of its misery after a highly publicized security breach that exposed the data of up to half a million users, and will be winding the service down over a 10-month period.

GOOGLE PIXEL 3: HIGH COST & SO CHEAP WITH THE MEMORY

GOOGLE PLAY STORE: MARKED AS MALICIOUS
The founder of Gab, an alternative social networking service that has attracted far-right groups, said today that the company’s app had been removed from the Google Play Store due to concerns about hate speech.
Google’s had a rough summer, polluted-apps-wise. Less than 24 hours after the launch of Android Oreo in August this year – the latest update to its mobile operating system – Google had to pull some 500 apps from its Play Store. It’s not that all the apps themselves were malicious. Rather, they all used a software development kit (SDK) called Igexin that could, among other things, spy on victims by latching onto otherwise benign apps and downloading malicious plugins. But more to the point, a lot of people picked up a case of Yuck in Google Play. By the time Google scrubbed them, the apps had been downloaded more than 100 million times.
It seems the Play Store is utterly infested with malware that will hijack your phone and serve you ads.

IPHONES AND IPADS: NOTHING'S TOO BIG TO FAIL
The latest crop of Apple iOS devices are technical marvels, but they have now become so expensive that you practically have to get a second mortgage now to afford them, and we may be witnessing the peak of technical advances with these products. While the company will always have its dedicated fans, demand for the devices has been waning considerably. It will be even more of a challenge for Cupertino if President Donald Trump gets his way with increased tariffs on Chinese manufactured goods.
APPLE SIRI: PLAY ROLE OF STUPID INTELLIGENT ASSISTANT THIS YEAR
It's been years since this poor excuse for an "intelligent assistant" has been released, and yet when you compare this product to Google Assistant, Amazon's Alexa, and Microsoft's Cortana, it's still the dunce of the bunch.

WINDOWS 10: WHAT ABOUT UPDATE SCHEDULE
Microsoft's switching to a much more aggressive update strategy has caused any number of issues for its end-users including botched update rollouts. While some may appreciate and even applaud the more progressive, risk-taking Microsoft compared to the company of old, others are calling for a return to focusing on basic fundamentals instead of introducing new functionality and a less frequent update schedule.
AMAZON HQ2: AN AMBITIOUS HEADQUARTERS EXPERIMENT
New York and Arlington, Va., traded billions of dollars in incentives for a shiny new Amazon HQ2.But the arrival of the new corporate headquarters could mean some serious challenges for the two cities. What appeared to be a year-long obsession over which city ended up getting the HQ2 nod ended in a bit of a let-down for emerging tech centers around the country when Big Bezos finally decided it was going to award it to two separate metropolitan centers: New York City and the Washington, DC area near Northern Virginia. Amazon’s deal for a second headquarters in Long Island City, N.Y., has prompted a state senator to draft legislation that would prohibit the buying or selling of real estate based on any nonpublic government action.
CRYPTOCURRENCIES: IT IS ALSO NOT SECURED
The proof-of-work blockchains that use the same algorithms as larger blockchains (such as ETC, which uses the same algorithm as ETH) are particularly vulnerable to attacks, as there are no barriers to entry in terms of capital costs. This year our faith in secure cryptocurrency, the CPU-mined darling of armchair speculative investing, got its comeuppance in the the form of Bitfi, an electronic crypto wallet device which was supposedly unhackable. The researcher notes that any miner who contributes as little as 2.5 percent of Ethereum Nethash can simply switch to mining Ethereum Classic and control more than 51 percent of hashing power of Ethereum Classic network. Well, not only did it turn out to be hackable, but it was hacked by a 15-year-old to play the classic 3D shoot-em-up DOOM. The exploit was so embarrassing for the company that it earned a Pwnie award for its awful vendor response.
As if security exploits weren't insult enough for injury to crypto currencies, Bitcoin has been crashing and burning in the cryptocurrency markets and has lost over 700 billion in value in the last year.

AUGMENTED REALITY: SUBSEQUENT CONSUMER FAILURE
Apple makes a big deal of AR, especially with respect to the iPad, but having to awkwardly hold a smartphone or tablet in front of you is a terrible user experience. AR is a technology that's just begging for smart glasses to take off, but that market is still stained by the initial reaction to, and subsequent consumer failure of, Google Glass.
UBER AND LYFT: SEXUAL ASSULT WOES
As if the company's trials and tribulations with internal sexual harassment issues in 2017 that led to the ouster of its founder and chief executive, Travis Kalanick, weren't bad enough, 103 drivers on the service have been investigated for sexually assaulting passengers on the ride sharing service. And since we don't want to play favorites, Lyft has also had its share of sexual assault woes.
