Queen Elizabeth II, Britain’s longest-serving monarch, has died at Balmoral Castle in Scotland after reigning for 70 years at the age of 96. The Queen came to the throne in 1952.
With her death, her eldest son and heir Charles will lead the country as the new King and Head of State for 14 Commonwealth realms. The new King will officially be known as King Charles III, it has been officially confirmed.
In a statement released by the Royal Family, Charles, the new King, said, “The death of my beloved Mother, Her Majesty The Queen, is a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family. We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished sovereign and a much-loved mother. I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the Realms and the Commonwealth and by countless people around the world. During this period of mourning and change, my family and I will be comforted and sustained by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which the Queen was so widely held.”
The Queen’s close family members travelled to Balmoral, near Aberdeenshire, after doctors placed the Queen under medical supervision. She has been suffering from age-related mobility issues and had cut down her travels, including appointing new Prime Minister Truss in Scotland earlier this week.
