Just before a scheduled company investor conference, Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealth was tragically shot and killed on December 4, 2024, outside the New York Hilton Midtown hotel in Manhattan. The NYPD confirmed a 50-year-old man was shot in front of the Hilton on Sixth Avenue around 6:40 am ET (1140 GMT) and was pronounced dead after being transported to a nearby hospital.
A masked assailant approached him from behind and fired multiple shots before fleeing the scene on an e-bike. Thompson was transported to Mount Sinai West Hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
The New York City Police Department has described the attack as a "brazen, targeted" act, indicating that Thompson was specifically targeted. Surveillance footage shows the gunman entering Central Park after the shooting, and a $10,000 reward has been offered for information leading to the perpetrator's arrest.
Thompson's wife, Paulette, revealed that he had received threats prior to the incident, possibly related to healthcare coverage issues. UnitedHealth Group, the parent company of UnitedHealthcare, expressed profound sadness over Thompson's death, highlighting his long tenure and respected leadership within the company.
Thompson, 50, had been with UnitedHealthcare since 2004 and became CEO in 2021. His leadership was instrumental in guiding the company through significant industry changes. The tragic event has shocked the business community, and authorities are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the attack.
