The Qualcomm’s latest enterprise processor integrates RFID directly into the chip alongside 5G, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0, and ultra-wideband, simplifying device design while enabling secure, contactless applications and powering diverse devices from rugged handhelds to smart kiosks
Qualcomm Technologies has introduced its latest breakthrough, the Dragonwing Q-6690, touted as the world’s first enterprise-grade mobile processor with fully integrated UHF RFID capabilities. The new chip combines advanced connectivity with AI-powered intelligence, offering businesses across retail, logistics, and manufacturing a flexible platform for next-generation digital transformation.
Industry-first integration of RFID and next-gen wireless
The Dragonwing Q-6690 marks a major leap for enterprise devices by embedding RFID directly into the processor, eliminating the need for external modules. This design innovation reduces device complexity, shrinks form factors, and enables secure, contactless applications such as asset tracking, product authentication, and access control.
Alongside RFID, the processor comes equipped with 5G, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0, and ultra-wideband support, delivering seamless global connectivity and enabling proximity-aware experiences. Qualcomm said the platform is built to support a range of devices, from rugged handhelds and smart kiosks to retail point-of-sale systems.
“The Dragonwing Q-6690 combines integrated RFID, AI, and wireless innovation in a single platform, accelerating digital transformation across industries,” said Art Miller, Vice President and Head of Retail at Qualcomm Technologies. “We’re particularly focused on helping retailers adapt to evolving customer expectations, whether through smarter kiosks, real-time inventory analytics, or contactless experiences.”
Software-configurable and upgrade-ready
In addition to hardware advancements, Qualcomm introduced software-configurable feature packs, enabling OEMs to tailor the processor’s computing, multimedia, and camera capabilities to their specific needs. These features can be upgraded over the air, allowing devices to evolve without hardware redesigns.
The modular approach, Qualcomm noted, extends product lifecycles, reduces certification hurdles, and accelerates time-to-market for enterprise device makers.
Industry reactions
Global retail and technology leaders have welcomed the launch. Decathlon, which has long embraced RFID across its supply chain, called the Dragonwing Q-6690 a “game changer” for boosting operational efficiency and improving sustainability through product traceability.
EssilorLuxottica highlighted the potential for richer consumer engagement in sectors like eyewear, where design and personalization are critical.
Meanwhile, the RAIN Alliance said Qualcomm’s move would democratize RFID adoption, putting powerful, RAIN-enabled devices into more hands and unlocking use cases ranging from automated checkout to digital product passports.
With Dragonwing Q-6690, Qualcomm positions itself at the intersection of AI, connectivity, and enterprise mobility, aiming to set a new standard for how businesses deploy technology to enhance operations and customer experiences.
