Nvidia’s $13 Billion Hugging Face Bet

Nvidia has agreed to acquire AI developer platform Hugging Face in a transaction valued at approximately $12.93 billion, transforming its three French founders into billionaires and significantly expanding Nvidia’s reach beyond chips into the open AI ecosystem. The transaction is expected to close in the first half of 2027, subject to regulatory approvals. 

Co-founders Clément Delangue, Julien Chaumond and Thomas Wolf are each estimated to have a net worth of around $1.8 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. The trio founded Hugging Face in 2016, initially pursuing a different product vision before turning it into one of AI’s most influential developer platforms. 

Hugging Face has become a central marketplace and community for open AI. Nvidia says the platform serves more than 18 million developers and over 200,000 companies, hosting more than three million models, 500,000 datasets and one million applications. 

For Nvidia, the acquisition represents a strategic expansion from supplying GPUs into controlling a critical layer of the AI development ecosystem. The company will pay approximately $11.9 billion to Hugging Face shareholders, alongside up to $1 billion in equity-based incentives to retain employees. 

Importantly, Nvidia has committed to keeping Hugging Face open and interoperable. Developers will remain free to choose their preferred models, frameworks, clouds, inference providers and computing platforms, with Nvidia hardware not required. 

The challenge will be preserving Hugging Face’s neutrality while it becomes owned by the world’s dominant AI-chip company. Developers and competitors will closely watch whether rival hardware platforms continue receiving equal treatment.

The deal signals a larger shift in the AI race: the battle is no longer only about who builds the most powerful chips or models, but who controls the platforms where millions of developers build, share and deploy AI
