Breaking News
Vince Zampella, one of the most influential figures in the modern video game industry and a key architect behind blockbuster franchises such as Call of Duty, Titanfall, Apex Legends and Battlefield, has died following a car accident in Los Angeles. He was 55.
According to local broadcaster NBC4, Zampella was killed in a single-vehicle crash on Sunday. One other person also died in the incident. Authorities have not immediately released further details surrounding the circumstances of the accident.
Zampella’s death marks a major loss for the global gaming community. Over a career spanning several decades, he played a defining role in shaping the first-person shooter genre and building some of the most commercially successful and culturally influential franchises in entertainment history.
He was a co-founder of Infinity Ward, the studio behind the original Call of Duty series. Zampella was instrumental in developing the early titles that helped establish Call of Duty as a dominant force in gaming, laying the foundation for what would become one of the highest-grossing franchises of all time.
In 2010, Zampella went on to co-found Respawn Entertainment, a studio that quickly gained critical acclaim for Titanfall and Titanfall 2. Respawn later achieved massive mainstream success with Apex Legends, a free-to-play battle royale shooter that attracted millions of players worldwide and became a cornerstone of the live-service gaming model. Respawn was eventually acquired by Electronic Arts, where Zampella assumed broader leadership responsibilities across the publisher’s shooter portfolio.
In recent years, Zampella was overseeing the Battlefield franchise and leading DICE’s Los Angeles studio. Battlefield 6, the latest instalment in the long-running series, was released earlier this year, adding another milestone to his legacy of large-scale multiplayer experiences.
Electronic Arts confirmed Zampella’s death in a statement, calling it an “unimaginable loss” and paying tribute to his impact as a creator, leader and visionary. The company said his work helped shape modern interactive entertainment and inspired countless developers and players around the world.
Incident Details
The crash occurred on a Los Angeles highway on Sunday. Zampella was travelling in a Ferrari with one other person when the vehicle reportedly veered off the road, struck a concrete barrier and caught fire. The California Highway Patrol said one occupant was ejected from the vehicle, while the other remained trapped inside. Both were pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not confirmed who was driving, and the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Zampella is remembered not only for the games he helped create, but for pushing creative and technical boundaries that redefined expectations for multiplayer shooters and live-service games across the industry.
