The new feature enables users to set up UPI AutoPay with RuPay Credit Cards, providing a credit buffer that reduces subscription failures and ensures uninterrupted recurring payments, offering a more reliable billing experience for both users and merchants
At the Global Fintech Fest 2025, PhonePe Payment Gateway (PhonePe PG) announced the launch of Subscription IQ, a new offering powered by UPI AutoPay on RuPay Credit Cards, in collaboration with JioHotstar. The feature is designed to simplify recurring payments and reduce subscription failures, offering both users and merchants a more dependable billing experience.
Previously, UPI AutoPay mandates were linked only to bank accounts, making them susceptible to failures due to low balances. The latest update allows users to set up AutoPay instructions using RuPay Credit Cards, providing a credit-based buffer for recurring payments like streaming subscriptions. This ensures uninterrupted services—even when bank accounts have insufficient funds.
Improved reliability for merchants and users
For merchants, this new functionality promises higher transaction success rates, reduced customer drop-offs, and a unified platform to manage all types of recurring payments—including UPI AutoPay, eNACH, and card-based billing.
Ankit Gaur, Head of Payment Gateway & Online Merchants at PhonePe, said, “Our goal is to make recurring payments effortless for users and highly reliable for businesses. With RuPay Credit Cards now integrated into UPI AutoPay, we’re offering a scalable solution that’s simple to use and built for long-term success.”
A spokesperson for JioHotstar welcomed the partnership, stating that the move would ensure seamless access to content, enhancing customer convenience by minimizing service disruptions caused by failed renewals.
PhonePe PG confirmed that this capability will soon be extended to more businesses through its Subscription Suite, further streamlining subscription payment experiences across India’s rapidly growing digital economy.
