Standardised hospital bill format introduced to bring clarity in medical charges

The Bureau of Indian Standards has launched a uniform hospital billing format across India, aiming to improve clarity, reduce disputes, and strengthen accountability, ensuring patients and providers can navigate healthcare costs with greater confidence.

Healthcare billing in India has long faced criticism for inconsistency. Patients often receive invoices that differ widely in layout, terminology, and itemisation, making it challenging to understand charges, compare costs, or verify payments. Rising medical expenses and increased reliance on private healthcare have amplified the demand for clear, fair, and transparent billing practices. The introduction of a standardised bill format by BIS addresses these concerns, aiming to improve consistency and accountability in hospitals nationwide.

Key features of the new format

The BIS-approved format specifies how hospitals must present essential billing information. It includes:

·         Patient details: Name, age, contact information, and unique ID.

·         Hospital information: Name, address, registration number, and treating physician.

·         Treatment breakdown: Itemised list of procedures, services, consultations, medicines, and consumables.

·         Clear charge categories: Separate headings for room charges, diagnostics, medications, professional fees, and other services.

·         Tax and insurance information: Applicable taxes, discounts, and insurance adjustments.

·         Total payable: A concise summary of net charges.

This structured approach ensures patients can easily understand the costs incurred and why they are being charged.
