Apple is reportedly finalizing a $1 billion annual deal with Google to use its Gemini AI model as an interim solution to enhance Siri’s capabilities while it develops its own system
Apple is preparing to integrate Google’s powerful Gemini artificial intelligence model into its Siri voice assistant under a potential three-year deal valued at about $1 billion per year, according to reports. The partnership, once finalized, is expected to help Apple address Siri’s long-standing limitations compared to rival voice assistants such as Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa.
The Gemini model, featuring an estimated 1.2 trillion parameters, is significantly more advanced than Apple’s existing AI systems. Apple intends to use the model as a temporary solution while continuing to develop its in-house large language models and AI infrastructure. The agreement marks a rare collaboration between two of the world’s biggest tech rivals, highlighting Apple’s urgency to catch up in the fast-evolving AI space.
Enhancing Siri while Apple builds its own AI future
The deal is reportedly distinct from previous talks about embedding Gemini directly into Siri as a conversational chatbot. It will not include Google’s AI search features within Apple’s platforms, ensuring that Apple maintains tight control over user experience and data privacy.
Apple had earlier delayed Siri’s major AI overhaul to 2026, a move that underscored internal challenges and leadership changes within its AI division. In March, reports suggested that Apple CEO Tim Cook had restructured the team, appointing Mike Rockwell to lead Siri development after setbacks under AI chief John Giannandrea.
With competitors like Google and Amazon already embedding generative AI into their assistants, Apple’s partnership with Google’s Gemini model could offer a vital technological bridge as it accelerates its own AI innovation efforts.
