Microsoft has rolled out the Recall feature for Copilot+ PCs along with a few more AI experiences such as improved search and click-to-do, for select Windows 11 PCs. The features, launched after months of speculation, marks a major step forward in Windows 11 innovation. These new AI capabilities aim to boost productivity and user experience on Windows 11. The newly launched features are available on Copilot+ PCs powered by Snapdragon, Intel, and AMD processors.
Microsoft has since improved the feature’s security, making it an optional, opt-in service. Data in Recall is now encrypted, and there are efforts to filter sensitive information, although some issues with filtering accuracy persist. Recall requires biometric sign-in via Windows Hello for added security.
The updated Windows search now accepts natural language queries, allowing users to search for content such as "brown dog" instead of needing exact file names. Additionally, click-to-do enables users to take actions on text and images on their screens—such as summarizing or editing—by pressing the Windows key and clicking. Initially, this feature is only available on Qualcomm-powered devices, with AMD and Intel support coming in the following months.
These new tools are launching globally but won’t be available in the EU and certain European countries until later in the year.
More about the ‘Recall’ feature
Recall functions like a photographic memory, presenting the user with what they have previously seen or done on the PC. There is a timeline of events that Recall presents, but users can also describe what they are looking for, and the options are displayed on a timeline that the PC creates across any application, website, document, or more to find a specific thing. The timeline is essentially a sequence of snapshots, with each snapshot depicting what was on the screen at that point in time.
