Netflix is actively exploring a potential acquisition of Warner Bros Discovery’s studio and streaming businesses, signaling a bold strategic move in the entertainment landscape. The streaming giant has engaged investment bank Moelis & Co to evaluate the opportunity and has been granted access to Warner Bros Discovery’s financial data room to conduct due diligence.
Should the deal proceed, Netflix would gain control over some of Hollywood’s most valuable franchises, including Harry Potter and the DC Comics universe, significantly enriching its content library. Warner Bros’ television division, already a producer of several successful Netflix originals like Running Point, You, and Maid, would further reinforce this partnership. The acquisition would likely include HBO and its streaming service, enhancing Netflix’s portfolio with additional premium dramas and expanding its subscriber base.
Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos has acknowledged that while the company traditionally prefers organic growth over acquisitions, it assesses deals based on their strategic fit and scale. However, he clarified Netflix’s disinterest in owning Warner Bros’ cable networks such as CNN and TNT, focusing solely on content and streaming assets.
The move comes as Warner Bros Discovery contemplates a corporate split and considers various takeover offers, which, if successful for Netflix, could reshape content competition in the global streaming industry.
