The Adani group is planning to enter into the race to acquire telecom spectrum starting July 26, directly having a face-off with Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Jio and Sunil Bharti Mittal’s Airtel. The Adani group had recently obtained National Long Distance (NLD) and International Long-Distance (NLD) licences.
Under India’s telecom regulations, the Adani entity would require a unified access service (UAS) permit from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to participate in the 5G airwaves sale.
Adani’s potential entry could boost competition levels in the upcoming 5G airwaves sale that till recently was expected to see muted bidding, given the ample spectrum on sale and the presence of just two major bidders in Jio and Bharti Airtel.
Last month, the Cabinet approved 5G auctions at reserve prices recommended by the sector regulator Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). The regulator had recommended about 39 percent cut in floor price for the sale of 5G spectrum for mobile services.
