Six months after pausing the feature due to a controversy over producing historically inaccurate images, Google will be allowing users to again generate images of people using its artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot Gemini.
The company will start rolling out an early access version of this capability in English language to Gemini Advanced subscribers as well as the business and enterprise subscribers of Google Workspace in the coming days. Google plans to gradually expand the feature to more users and languages soon.
Gemini Advanced, the premium version of the Gemini AI chatbot, is now available as part of the newly launched Google One AI Premium Plan, priced at Rs 1,950 per month following a one-month free trial.
This upgraded version utilizes Google's latest Imagen 3 image generation model, introduced at the Google I/O 2024 conference in May. Imagen 3 offers enhanced natural language understanding and intent recognition, producing "lifelike images with remarkable detail" and significantly reducing visual imperfections compared to earlier models.
Dave Citron, Google’s Senior Director of Product Management for Gemini Experiences, explained that users can now create diverse image styles—ranging from photorealistic landscapes to whimsical claymation scenes—with just a few words.
In February, Google paused Gemini's image generation feature for people due to backlash over inaccuracies in historical depictions, including images of US Founding Fathers. This pause followed the initial rollout of the image generation capabilities.
