In Hyderabad Rs 4.2 lakh has been lost by a 70-year-old retired government employee in a KYC fraud case. Resident of Sainikpuri, the victim received a message stating- “Dear customer your KYC has been suspended. Paytm office Ph: 70xxxxxxxx calls immediately, your account will be blocked within 24 hours. Thank U Paytm team”. With the fear that his account will be blocked, the victim dialled the phone number and spoke to the accused. The unidentified man, posing as a Paytm employee, lured him into completing his Paytm KYC process, by stating that his account will be blocked if he doesn’t do so.
The accused instructed him to install AnyDesk app on his mobile phone and asked him to share the ID of the remote access app. He was asked to add Rs 10 to his Paytm wallet. The moment he shared credit and debit card details and OTP in the app, money was deducted. A case was registered by Rachakonda cybercrime police.
These days many fraudsters are sending such bulk SMSes, and most of the victims are aged above 55. Police pass on messages that citizens have to be cautious as KYC frauds have seen a sudden rise during the lockdown.
