Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced the 'Nirantara' initiative in the 2025-26 budget, under which the Department of School Education and Literacy is developing the app. A tender will be invited soon, and the app is expected to be ready by June 2025.
The Karnataka government is set to introduce an AI-based facial recognition system to streamline attendance tracking in government schools. Announced by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in the 2025-26 budget, the initiative, named 'Nirantara', aims to make attendance marking faster, more efficient, and error-free.
How the AI Attendance System Works
The AI attendance system will allow teachers to record the attendance of 50 students within seconds, eliminating the need for traditional roll calls or manual entries. Unlike conventional face detection for attendance, which captures a full facial image, this system will identify students using unique facial features like eyes and nose, ensuring high accuracy and security.
Key Features of the AI Facial Recognition System
● Face Recognition Attendance App – The app will enable teachers to mark attendance using their mobile devices, ensuring quick and seamless data collection.
Mobile Attendance App – The system will be installed on teachers' smartphones and linked to the Students Achievement Tracking System (SATS), integrating student data in real time.
● Secure and Efficient – The AI facial recognition technology ensures precise identification, preventing proxy attendance and errors in manual recording.
● Faster Implementation – The Department of School Education and Literacy is currently developing the app, with a tender to be invited soon. The government aims to launch it by June 2025.
AI-based attendance tracking offers several advantages, making the process more efficient and accurate. By reducing the time spent on roll calls, it allows teachers to focus more on classroom instruction. The system enhances accuracy by minimizing human errors and preventing proxy attendance through AI-driven facial recognition.
Additionally, its integration with the Students Achievement Tracking System (SATS) ensures real-time updates, enabling better student monitoring. With its scalability, the Face Recognition Attendance App can also be extended to other government institutions, including colleges and offices.
The Nirantara AI attendance system marks a significant step in modernizing Karnataka's education sector. By leveraging AI facial recognition, the state is enhancing efficiency, transparency, and accuracy in student tracking. If successful, this model could pave the way for nationwide adoption of AI-driven attendance systems in schools.
