The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence is triggering an unprecedented surge in electricity demand, placing corporate climate commitments under growing strain. As AI models scale and data centers multiply, the industry’s immediate need for reliable power is reshaping global energy strategies—often in uncomfortable ways.
In the near term, many technology companies are turning back to natural gas to ensure grid stability and meet round-the-clock compute requirements. This shift risks slowing progress on emissions reduction, highlighting a stark trade-off between AI growth and sustainability targets. For hyperscalers, uninterrupted power now outweighs purely green sourcing.
At the same time, AI is accelerating a nuclear renaissance. Stable, carbon-free baseload power has renewed interest in small modular reactors (SMRs), with Amazon, Google, and Microsoft backing nuclear projects to secure long-term energy independence. Nuclear is increasingly viewed not as a legacy technology, but as a strategic enabler of AI scale.
