Claude users can now access the AI assistant from their cars, with hands-free conversations and recent chats available through Apple’s in-vehicle platform, while controls remain limited to the chatbot itself.
Anthropic has introduced Apple CarPlay support for its Claude AI assistant, allowing users to interact with the chatbot through compatible vehicle infotainment systems while on the road.
The integration is available through the Claude app for iPhone and is designed to enable voice-based conversations without requiring users to handle their phones. Drivers can start a new conversation or continue a recent chat directly from the CarPlay interface.
The addition comes after Apple expanded CarPlay to support third-party chatbot applications with iOS 26.4. Developers integrating such services need to follow Apple’s specific CarPlay design requirements and obtain the necessary permissions before making their apps available on the platform.
Voice conversations while driving
Claude's CarPlay interface opens with an option to begin a hands-free conversation. Users can ask questions and receive spoken responses while keeping their attention on the road. The interface also provides controls to mute or resume the conversation and end an ongoing session.
Visual indicators show when Claude is listening or responding, giving users a clearer view of the assistant's current status.
However, the integration has some limitations. Claude cannot operate vehicle controls or access and manage iPhone functions through CarPlay. Users must also manually launch Claude from the CarPlay screen before starting a conversation, as the integration does not support third-party wake words.
Apple has traditionally kept tight controls over the types of third-party applications available through CarPlay, particularly because of concerns around driver distraction. The platform has generally focused on applications that can be safely used while driving.
AI assistants expand into cars
Anthropic's move follows the arrival of other AI assistants on CarPlay. OpenAI previously brought ChatGPT to Apple's in-car platform, giving users another option for accessing conversational AI while travelling.
The growing presence of AI chatbots in vehicles reflects a broader shift towards hands-free digital assistants. By bringing conversational AI into car infotainment systems, companies are seeking to make their services available beyond smartphones and computers.
For Claude users, CarPlay support provides a more convenient way to continue conversations while travelling, while Apple's restrictions ensure that the chatbot remains primarily focused on voice interaction rather than controlling other vehicle or device functions.
