Hyderabad-based defence technology company Zen Technologies has approved the acquisition of a 51.98% stake in Bengaluru-based Cogknit Semantics for approximately ₹135 crore, strengthening its presence in indigenous defence technology and battlefield management solutions.
The proposed acquisition reflects Zen Technologies' strategy to expand beyond its established expertise in military training simulators and counter-drone systems. Cogknit's capabilities in battlefield management technology could complement Zen's existing portfolio and support the development of integrated defence solutions.
Battlefield management systems help military commanders collect, process and share operational information across units. By combining location intelligence, communications and situational awareness, these platforms can improve coordination, accelerate decision-making and strengthen operational effectiveness in complex security environments.
The transaction also highlights the growing importance of software-led innovation in India's defence modernisation. Artificial intelligence, real-time data analytics, secure communications and autonomous technologies are increasingly shaping military requirements. Integrating these capabilities with existing defence platforms could create opportunities for more responsive and connected systems.
For Zen Technologies, the investment offers an opportunity to diversify its technology portfolio, deepen research capabilities and participate in emerging defence procurement programmes. However, the commercial benefits will depend on successful integration, product development, customer adoption and execution of future contracts.
The acquisition reinforces India's broader Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat ambitions, particularly the push to develop domestically controlled defence technologies. As India prioritises indigenous innovation and reduces dependence on imported military systems, partnerships between established defence manufacturers and specialised technology companies could accelerate development, strengthen intellectual property ownership and improve long-term competitiveness.
