Apple Bids Farewell to Tim Cook

Apple has hosted a farewell celebration for CEO Tim Cook as he prepares to step down after 15 years at the helm, marking the end of one of the most consequential leadership eras in the technology industry.

The event was held at Apple Park in Cupertino on August 23, a day before Cook marked his 15th anniversary as CEO. Around 200 people, mostly Apple employees, reportedly attended the gathering at Caffè Macs and the headquarters’ central courtyard, where OneRepublic performed.

Several prominent figures paid tribute to Cook, including Laurene Powell Jobs, widow of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, former Apple COO Jeff Williams, services chief Eddy Cue and incoming CEO John Ternus. Cook also addressed employees during the gathering.

Cook became Apple CEO in August 2011, succeeding Steve Jobs. His tenure transformed Apple into a much larger global technology and services powerhouse while expanding businesses including wearables, services and silicon development.

Cook will officially step down as CEO on September 1, but he is not leaving Apple. He will become executive chairman and continue assisting the company in selected areas, including engagement with policymakers worldwide.

John Ternus, currently Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Engineering, will take over as CEO. Ternus joined Apple in 2001 and has led hardware engineering since 2021. Apple is emphasizing continuity during the leadership transition, with few immediate organizational changes expected.

The transition comes at a critical time as Apple navigates accelerating competition in artificial intelligence while preparing its next generation of devices. Ternus will therefore inherit not only one of the world's most valuable technology companies, but also the challenge of defining Apple’s next era of innovation.
