Apple shuts down “Dark Sky” app
2023-01-02Apple has shut down the popular weather app “Dark Sky” from January 1, 2023. The app was taken down from the App store in September last year. Apple acquired Dark Sky in 2020, and has integrated several of the app’s features into the pre-installed Weather app on the iPhone, iPad, and Mac.
Earlier in December, Apple shared a support document where Dark Sky app users can replace it with the Weather app, which offers “hyperlocal” forecasts including next-hour precipitation, hourly forecasts for the next 10 days, high-resolution radar maps, and severe weather notifications.
Though the Dark Sky app will no longer provide weather data, the service still has a tiny bit of life left in it. Developers will still be able to get weather data from its API until March 31st, 2023, despite Apple’s earlier announcement that it would be shut down alongside the app. (The company’s de-facto replacement is called WeatherKit, and even Android developers can integrate data from it if they want.)
In August 2020, the weather application had announced that Android users would no longer be able to access the app and subscribers who were previously active would receive a full refund. Users are needed to have iOS 16, iPadOS 16, or macOS Ventura to use Dark Sky features in the Weather App. Some of the features are currently available in select countries.
