AT&T a leading U.S. telecommunications company, announced on Friday that it experienced a massive hacking incident in April 2024.
The breach involved the illegal downloading of data from approximately 109 million customer accounts, which included records of calls and texts from 2022. The FBI is actively investigating the incident, and at least one individual has been arrested in connection with the breach.
However, the breach did not involve the content of calls or texts or personal information like social security numbers. This incident follows a significant ransomware attack on UnitedHealth Group’s Change Healthcare unit in February, which potentially exposed private data of about one-third of the U.S. population.
The breach raises serious concerns about the privacy and security of customer communication records. Compromised data could be used for various malicious activities, including identity theft, phishing attacks, and unauthorized surveillance.
As per AT&T, this is a new incident and not connected to the March 2024 breach where personal information was exposed. They believe the exposed data is not publicly available. They are notifying affected customers and offering resources to protect their information.
Moving forward, be cautious of unsolicited calls or texts, especially if they try to use the information you might have shared through calls or texts (even location) to gain your trust. Consider changing your voicemail PIN and other security measures related to your phone number. Stay updated on any further information from AT&T regarding the breach and their recommendations.
