According to a news source, to combat Reliance Jio’s strategy of JioPhone and retaining its share of mass market, Bharti Airtel may come up with 4G smartphone during Diwali for Rs.2,500 with a huge amount of data and voice minutes. The telco is already in talks with handset makers over 4G smartphone.
The handset will be co-promoted by both the telco and the device maker, but it will not be subsidised by Airtel. The device will run on popular operating system, Android. Users will be free to download all the apps available on Google Play Store.
The news source also mentioned that Lava and Karbonn are already in talks with the telco separately for 4G smartphone.
Though both the telecom companies, Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel, targeting the mass share of the market that are still using feature phone, are following different strategies to tap the segment. Reliance Jio is offering a 4G feature phone with a locked-in Jio SIM at Rs.1,500 as deposit which will be returned after three years. Reliance Jio is also offering unlimited voice and data, access to the Internet and pre-loaded Jio apps, including live TV, cinema, music, Facebook, YouTube, and WhatsApp for a subscription of Rs.153.
Airtel is confident about its low-cost 4G smartphone with larger screen, battery, access to an array of apps on the Google Play Store which will provide a better user experience. Moreover, it will come with a bundled plan of both data and voice.
