The leadership transition marks a new chapter for the Tata-owned quick commerce platform, with cofounder Hari Menon stepping away from day-to-day operations after more than a decade while remaining involved as a board member and mentor.
BigBasket, one of India's leading online grocery and quick commerce platforms, has announced a major leadership transition with cofounder Hari Menon stepping down as Chief Executive Officer. The company has appointed Amit Nanda, a former senior executive at Amazon India, to lead the business as it seeks to strengthen its position in the country's increasingly competitive quick commerce market.
Menon's departure from day-to-day management marks the end of a significant chapter in BigBasket's history. Since helping establish the company in 2011, he has overseen its transformation from an online grocery startup into a nationwide consumer platform and played a pivotal role in its integration into the Tata Group ecosystem.
Despite relinquishing operational responsibilities, Menon will continue to remain closely associated with the company. He, along with fellow cofounder Vipul Parekh, will retain board positions and provide strategic guidance to the new leadership team.
In a statement, Menon said, “Having built BigBasket from its inception to its current position as one of India’s most trusted consumer platforms, I am delighted to welcome Amit (Nanda) as CEO. His deep understanding of consumers, strong track record of building and scaling businesses, and extensive experience across e-commerce and consumer sectors make him uniquely positioned to lead BigBasket on its journey ahead.”
Amazon veteran brings deep e-commerce experience
Nanda joins BigBasket after an 11-year stint at Amazon India, where he held several leadership positions across marketplace operations, product development, technology and private brands. Most recently, he served as Director of Selling Partner Services, overseeing one of the company's largest business segments and its third-party marketplace ecosystem.
Prior to Amazon, he worked with Hindustan Unilever and Citibank, bringing more than two decades of experience spanning consumer goods, banking and digital commerce.
BigBasket said Nanda will focus on accelerating growth across its quick commerce and grocery businesses while driving innovation and strengthening customer engagement. The company believes his expertise in scaling large consumer-facing businesses will be critical as competition intensifies in the rapid-delivery segment.
Commenting on his appointment, Nanda said, “I am incredibly excited to join BigBasket and build upon the phenomenal trust it has established with millions of consumers across India. Combining BigBasket’s customer-first values with the trusted legacy of the Tata group creates a strong foundation for the future. I have deep admiration for the organisation Hari (Menon) and the team have built — particularly its powerhouse private labels. I look forward to partnering closely with Hari and the entire leadership team to drive our shared vision and capture the massive growth opportunities before us.”
Focus on growth amid intensifying competition
The leadership change comes as India's quick commerce industry experiences rapid expansion, driven by rising consumer demand for convenience and faster deliveries. Companies across the sector are investing heavily in logistics, technology and dark-store networks to gain market share.
BigBasket currently operates more than 900 dark stores and serves customers across over 60 cities. With Nanda at the helm and continued support from its founding leadership, the company is positioning itself to capitalise on the next phase of growth in one of India's fastest-evolving digital commerce segments.
Welcoming the appointment, Sajith Sivanandan, CEO and Managing Director of Tata Digital and Chairperson of BigBasket, said Nanda's experience in leading large-scale businesses and his understanding of digital commerce make him well suited to guide the company through its next stage of development.
