X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk, has rolled out a significant update to its blocking feature, offering users a more flexible way to control interactions on the platform. Previously, when users blocked an account, it restricted not only engagement with posts but also prevented the blocked user from viewing any of the blocker’s content, whether public or private. With the new update, however, users who are blocked can still view public posts made by the blocker, but are still unable to interact with the content in any way.
The change in the blocking feature now ensures that blocked users can see public content, but their ability to engage—such as liking, replying, sharing, or reposting—is entirely restricted. This update is designed to allow users to maintain their privacy by limiting direct engagement, while still providing transparency for publicly shared posts.
The process for blocking someone on X remains unchanged. Users can block others by tapping on the three-dot menu in the upper-right corner of a post, selecting "Block," and confirming the action. Unlike the "Mute" option, which simply reduces engagement but doesn’t entirely block interactions, the "Block" feature is a more decisive measure, still preventing users from sending direct messages or commenting on the blocker’s posts.
Blocked users will not be notified that they have been blocked, but they will see the word "Blocked" in place of the typical "Follow" button when attempting to visit the blocker’s profile. While they can see public posts, those posts will not appear on their timelines, unless a mutual connection tags them in a post. Even in those cases, the tagged content can still be seen by the blocked user, although they cannot engage with it.
A notable point of this update is that blocked users can directly view the blocker’s public profile by selecting the "Yes, view profile" option when prompted by the platform, making it easier to access publicly shared content without the need for external workarounds.
Along with the recent changes to the blocking feature, X has unveiled an updated Privacy Policy, set to take effect on November 15. This new policy grants X the right to retain user data indefinitely and share it with third-party partners for artificial intelligence (AI) training. Notably, users will not be able to opt out of this data-sharing process, raising concerns about privacy and the platform's handling of personal information. Additionally, the updated policy includes a link that directs users to their account settings, where they can review and adjust their privacy preferences.
This change to the blocking feature and the revised privacy policy are part of Elon Musk’s broader strategy to transform X into a platform with more robust features, focusing on user control and expanded use of data for AI initiatives, while still maintaining engagement with the platform’s public content.
