Longtime social media rivals Meta and Snap are expected to reveal their latest advancement in augmented reality (AR) glasses.
As per news source, it is expected that on 17th September at the annual Partner Summit in Los Angeles, Snap CEO Evan Spiegel will first unveil the fifth generation of Spectacles.
Also, Meta chief Mark Zuckerberg on 25th September is scheduled to introduce the company’s first AR glasses, codenamed Orion, at his Connect conference in Menlo Park.
It’s fascinating to observe how both Meta and Snap have taken different approaches in developing AR glasses, yet they continue to face the same challenge - the technology which is not ready for mainstream adoption.
As per sources, both the companies do not intend to sell the glasses they’ll showcase this month.
Snap seems poised to replicate its 2021 strategy by distributing the upgraded Spectacles model to select developers and partners.
The company is reportedly producing fewer than 10,000 units, while Meta is manufacturing an even smaller quantity of its Orion glasses.
The restricted production is primarily driven by the high costs of manufacturing these advanced devices. Snap’s newest Spectacles are anticipated to cost several thousand dollars per unit to produce, while Meta’s Orion glasses reportedly incurred billions in development expenses.
