Breaking News
ByteDance has agreed to sell its gaming subsidiary Moonton to Savvy Games Group in a deal valued at approximately $6 billion, marking a significant step in the company’s shift away from gaming.
Moonton, best known for its hit title Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, has built a strong presence in the global mobile gaming market, particularly in Asia. The game has amassed more than 1.5 billion downloads, making it one of the most successful mobile titles in its category. The transaction is expected to be completed in the near future, according to reports citing internal communications.
ByteDance Refocuses on AI
The divestment aligns with ByteDance’s broader strategy to scale back its gaming ambitions. The company began reducing its gaming footprint in recent years, including the shutdown of its Nuverse division, which had published titles such as Marvel Snap and Ragnarok X: Next Generation.
Having acquired Moonton just a few years ago, ByteDance is now redirecting resources toward artificial intelligence, an area where it is competing with other major Chinese technology firms. The pivot reflects growing industry interest in AI-driven platforms, including chatbots and foundational models, as companies seek new growth opportunities.
Savvy Games Expands Global Footprint
Meanwhile, Savvy Games Group, backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, continues to expand its footprint in the global gaming industry. The company has been actively investing in studios and publishers as part of a long-term strategy to position itself as a major player in the sector.
In recent years, Savvy Games has pursued several high-profile acquisitions and investments, underscoring its ambition to build a diversified gaming portfolio. The addition of Moonton is expected to strengthen its presence in the fast-growing mobile gaming segment.
The deal comes amid a broader wave of consolidation across the gaming industry, which has seen significant restructuring and workforce reductions over the past few years. As companies streamline operations and focus on profitability, large-scale transactions such as this highlight the shifting dynamics of the global gaming market.
