Canon is celebrating 30 years of its PowerShot compact camera range with a special edition designed to appeal to both loyal fans and a new wave of creators. The company has announced the PowerShot G7 X Mark III 30th Anniversary Edition, a limited-run version of one of its most popular compact cameras, created to mark the series’ journey since its launch in the 1990s.
The PowerShot legacy began in July 1996 with the introduction of the PowerShot 600, Canon’s first consumer digital camera. Modest by today’s standards, it featured a fixed 50mm-equivalent lens and a 0.57-megapixel sensor. At the time, however, it played a key role in bringing digital photography to everyday consumers. Nearly three decades on, the PowerShot name has expanded into a broad lineup, with Canon releasing roughly 200 models in the US market alone.
For the anniversary release, Canon has turned to a well-known favourite. Originally launched in 2019, the PowerShot G7 X Mark III has found strong appeal among vloggers, travellers, and social media creators for its blend of portability, image quality, and video capabilities. The commemorative edition retains all the elements that made the camera successful, while adding subtle design accents to distinguish it from the standard model.
On the inside, nothing has changed. The camera continues to feature a 20-megapixel Type 1 stacked CMOS sensor paired with Canon’s DIGIC 8 processor. It supports 4K video recording at up to 30fps and includes Canon’s popular 24–100mm equivalent f/1.8–2.8 zoom lens. Even years after its debut, this setup remains competitive in the compact camera space, especially as interest in dedicated cameras has seen a resurgence.
