The Centre has formally notified a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) for Tata Semiconductor Manufacturing in Gujarat’s Dholera Special Investment Region. The notified SEZ spans 66.166 hectares, covering plots within Dholera’s industrial zone under Town Planning Scheme 2A, according to a notification by Ministry of Commerce.
The Dholera semiconductor plant is India's first chip fabrication unit which was approved the Centre in February 2024 and is part of Centre's India Semiconductor Mission. The semiconductor chip plant is likely to commence work by 2027.
Initially slated to be established on a 100 acres of land, the Gujarat government had promised to give over 60 acres of land parcel to Tata Electronics for expansion in Dholera.
The zone is dedicated exclusively to electronic hardware, software, and IT-enabled services, positioning it as a key node in the broader semiconductor and electronics value chain.
The approval follows the government granting a letter of approval in March 2026, after confirming that the proposal met requirements under the Special Economic Zones Act, 2005. It also establishes an approval committee to oversee the SEZ's operations, comprising representatives from the commerce ministry, tax authorities, customs, and the state government.
Dholera, Gujarat, has been in the spotlight for the last couple of years as the site of India's first semiconductor fabrication plant.
