Las vegas,USA: CES, the world’s largest gathering for the consumer technology industry, is taking place from January 7 – 10, 2020 in Las Vegas. It is here that major tech companies splurge huge amounts of money on their gigantic stands at the CES expo.
A new era of mobile computing innovation; the future of immersive sports and entertainment - Intel demonstrated all of these and more at CES 2020. Most of the biggest names in tech and stacks of start-ups you have never heard of had participated at the event this year. CES this year is seeing some major breakthroughs in artificial intelligence (AI) that will pave the way for autonomous driving. In yet another area, an Alexa-enabled Lamborghini is what visitors got to see.
One of the biggest developments at the last few CES expos has been Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant's rival efforts to extend their reach to the home and beyond. Last year things peaked with an Alexa-activated toilet flush, but over the past 12 months manufacturers have developed voice-controlled "skills" or "actions" for more products, and in some cases embedded one of the virtual assistants outright.
Facebook also announced a new version of its "Privacy Checkup" tool that it hopes will help guide users through important privacy settings. The company said the updated tool will help users control who can see what they share, how their information is used and how they can boost their account security.
Uber and Hyundai unveiled a flying taxi that may eventually transform your ridesharing trips. The first prototype will be ready in 2023, according to a Hyundai spokesperson.
CES 2020 is a chance for tech vendors to pitch their latest wares to electronic retailers and to show off to the competition about their freshest innovations. Voice was once again centre stage at the event. Google trebled the size of its booth from last year and device manufacturers are stumbling over one another to incorporate voice technology into their products. Samsung is rumoured to be revealing a fresh Galaxy Home speaker powered by its smart assistant Bixby, and German start-up Autolabs will demo Chris - a virtual helper designed for use in cars. Meanwhile, housewares manufacturer Simplehuman showed us how voice could enhance a rubbish bin so that no-one has to touch the dirty lid.
Like robots, TVs are always a focus at CES. Samsung has unveiled a new model called Sero, which features a display that can rotate either horizontally or vertically. The Korean brand is betting on a unique concept specifically designed with smartphone users in mind.
Intel showcased how the company is infusing intelligence across the cloud, network, edge and PC, and driving positive impact for people, business and society. Bob Swan, CEO, Intel kicked the conference by sharing updates from its Mobileye business, including a demonstration of its self-driving robocar navigating traffic in a natural manner. The drive demonstrated Mobileye’s unique and innovative approach to deliver safer mobility for all with a combination of artificial intelligence, computer vision, the regulatory science model of RSS and true redundancy through independent sensing systems.
The PC market including HP, Dell, Lenovo and Acer have poised to heat up in 2020 with the introduction of next-generation computers and peripherals at the Consumer Electronics Show.
Most of the major players introduced a range of innovative new laptops, hybrids and other portables to strengthen their position in the highly competitive PC market, which is currently dominated by Lenovo, HP Inc and Dell Technologies.
These three tech giants command 63.7% of the total market share trailed by Apple with 7.5% share. However, on a year-over-year basis, while Apple’s market share declined, Lenovo, HP and Dell witnessed growth.
Lenovo had unveiled its foldable laptop, of which it has been offering glimpses since at least 2017. The ThinkPad X1 Fold will have multiple modes, including the ability to completely open up to a 13.3-inch laptop. The folding mechanism, which has been tricky for some other companies to deploy, makes it easier to transport. Unlike Samsung Galaxy Fold and Lenovo’s own forthcoming Motorola Razr smartphone, there was no crease in the display when it was fully unfolded at CES.
The ThinkPad X1 Fold is priced at $2,499 and is expected to be available from the second half of 2020. The company will also offer a 5G version of the computer for an extra charge, making it one of the first computers to run on the next-gen high-speed wireless standard. The device is likely to aid Lenovo in getting first-mover advantage in the foldable computer category, which is getting a push from tech companies to become a mainstream hit.
HP had introduced its Envy 32 All-in-One desktop. The system has an Intel 9th Generation Core i7 processor, NVIDIA’s NVDA GeForce RTX 2080 GPU, a sophisticated audio sub-system, and a 31.5-inch 4K Ultra-HD monitor. The device is expected to give HP a solid foothold in the segment.
HP also introduced HP Elite Dragonfly G2, which is being touted as the first business computer with 5G connectivity support and a built-in tile tracker that sends alerts to users when the laptop is misplaced or left behind. The integration of 5G support will likely be a boon for HP, with the global adoption of 5G poised to take off by 2021. However, HP is yet to reveal the pricing and availability details of the new Elite Dragonfly G2 laptop.
Dell introduced Latitude 9510, which will have 5G ready design, powerful audio features and a battery life target of up to 30 hours. The product will be available globally from March 26, starting at $1,799. Latitude 9510 is expected to lead the commercial PC industry with the first built-in and automated AI-based optimization technology called Dell Optimizer. The new software helps reduce lags and delays with the use of AI and machine learning.
The company also introduced XPS 13 with the first ever, virtually borderless InfinityEdge display. The device will offer 10th Gen Intel Core Processors and a longer battery life. Moreover, Dell introduced a range of monitors, namely the Dell 86 4K Interactive Touch Monitor, the UltraSharp 43 4K USB-C Monitor, the UltraSharp 27 4K USB-C Monitor and Alienware 25 Gaming Monitor, which features AMD Radeon FreeSync technology and is NVIDIA G-SYNC compatible.
A start-up called Elephant Robotics developed a robotic pet cat called MarsCat. The bionic feline can walk, stretch, play with toys, avoid obstacles and bite its nails. It can also recognize human faces and knows 20 commands and phrases, including "sit" and "come here." It may be the only time a cat will listen to you.
Neon CEO Pranav Mistry said that he's not aiming “to replace humans but rather add a "species" of complementary companions that can learn your likes and dislikes, such as if you prefer plain or pepperoni pizza, and ultimately become your friends”. These Neon avatars will be interactive on smartphones or on larger screens, such as in stores. They're expected to launch later this year, possibly with a subscription model.
CES demonstrated a number of innovative devices that bode well for the industry. Moreover, the emergence of 5G, AI, machine learning and foldable computers are likely to be the key catalysts in expanding the scope of the PC market.
