New market data shows rapid growth for competing AI assistants, changing consumer behaviour, and increasing reliance on generative AI for search, financial decisions, and creative tasks, reshaping the competitive landscape of the AI industry.
The generative artificial intelligence market is undergoing a significant shift as new competitors gain ground against established leaders, according to recent research from Comscore. While ChatGPT continues to dominate user engagement in the United States, rival platforms are rapidly expanding their presence, signalling a more competitive and diversified AI ecosystem.
The report points to changing consumer preferences as users increasingly turn to AI assistants for information discovery, decision-making, and content creation. This trend is gradually altering traditional internet search behaviour and creating opportunities for a broader range of AI providers.
Among the fastest-growing platforms is Anthropic’s Claude, which recorded an extraordinary increase in user interactions over a five-month period. The platform’s conversation volume expanded from just over one million interactions to more than 22 million, highlighting growing interest in alternative AI assistants.
Despite the rise of competitors, ChatGPT remains the clear market leader, accounting for approximately 70% of AI prompt activity in the U.S. market. However, that share has declined compared with the previous year, indicating that competitors are steadily attracting users and reducing the gap.
Google’s Gemini expands through ecosystem integration
Google’s Gemini has emerged as one of the strongest challengers in the AI assistant market. The platform significantly increased its share of prompt activity, benefiting from Google's strategy of embedding Gemini across its technology ecosystem.
The integration of Gemini into Android devices, productivity applications, and search-related services has helped drive adoption among consumers. Analysts suggest that placing AI capabilities directly within frequently used digital products has accelerated user engagement and increased visibility for the platform.
The findings also underscore how AI-powered features are becoming deeply integrated into everyday online experiences. AI-generated summaries and responses are now appearing in a growing number of search results, changing how users access information and interact with digital content.
AI adoption broadens across age groups and use cases
The report highlights notable demographic shifts in AI usage. Contrary to expectations that younger users would lead adoption, individuals aged between 55 and 64 recorded one of the strongest increases in AI assistant usage over the past year.
AI tools are also playing a growing role in financial decision-making. According to the research, a substantial share of consumers now consult AI assistants before applying for financial products such as credit cards, using the technology to compare options and gather information.
Beyond search and research, specialised AI applications focused on image creation, audio production, and design workflows are continuing to attract users. The trend reflects the expanding role of generative AI as both a productivity tool and a creative platform, further intensifying competition among technology companies seeking to capture the next wave of AI adoption.
