OpenAI has unveiled a significant update to ChatGPT, announcing unlimited text-based conversations for users on the Free and Go tiers. The announcement comes as the AI chatbot surpasses one billion weekly active users.
The new feature will be supported by the latest GPT-5.6 Luna model. It will become the default model for Free and Go users, replacing GPT-5.5.
OpenAI is also rolling out a new “Think” button for Free and Go users, allowing them to choose a higher reasoning mode for more complex questions.
While text chats will be unlimited, separate usage limits will continue to apply for file uploads, image uploads, voice interactions, and image generation features.
The addition of the Think mode is aimed at giving Free and Go users access to stronger reasoning capabilities when tackling difficult queries.
The update also brings enhancements for Plus and Pro subscribers, who will gain access to the upgraded GPT-5.6 Sol model.
According to OpenAI, GPT-5.6 Sol is optimized for tasks such as answering questions, conducting web research, offering advice, planning, writing, and supporting decision-making. The company says the model delivers responses that are more concise and robust than those of its predecessor.
In addition, Plus and Pro users will get a new thinking slider, enabling them to control how much reasoning effort the model applies depending on the complexity of the task.
OpenAI’s internal evaluation indicates that both new models outperform GPT-5.5-Instant in accuracy.
The company reported that factual errors were 62% lower with GPT-5.6 Luna and 68% lower with GPT-5.6 Sol compared with the previous model.
These results, according to OpenAI, demonstrate meaningful improvements in the reliability and accuracy of ChatGPT responses following the latest update.
