China wants to cut the dependence on tech from the US. A report by South Morning China Post mentions that China has intensified its efforts to replace macOS and Windows with its own operating system — Kylin.
China is working on an open-source version of Kylin. Kylinsoft is a subsidiary of state-owned China Electronics Corp. Kylin was introduced in 2011 by the National University of Defence Technology and is widely used by China’s military and government computers.
By making it open-source, China will now allow programmers and developers to share codes for the Kylin operating system. Kylinsoft has joined hands with about a dozen Chinese companies to expand its efforts.
Currently, Windows is the top operating system used in China and Apple is making its entry in the market as well. Apple’s macOS share is going up and now stands at 15% in China. Microsoft Windows dominates the market with about 85% share.
