Cyber Attack Disrupts Uttarakhand Government IT Systems

An unexpected and sophisticated cyberattack struck Uttarakhand, disabling more than 90 critical government websites inoperable, leading to a complete standstill in various essential functions including Chief Minister's helpline. This incident has brought public administration to a near halt, affecting various online services that citizens rely on.

The cyberattack has compromised vital services, including the e-office systems in multiple districts. Consequently, this has halted government operations across the board, with even land registry services forced to shut down. Functions within secretariats and public offices have also come to a standstill.

Reports indicate that the attack was sophisticated enough to breach the state’s most secure internet services and infiltrate the main state data center, making it exceedingly difficult for government websites to remain operational.

In response to the attack, Nitesh Jha, head of the state IT department, activated emergency protocols. He dispatched a team of cybersecurity experts led by IT Director Nitika Khandelwal to assess and mitigate the damage. Despite their best efforts throughout the day, the virus remained active, and recovery attempts were largely unsuccessful.
