Deepfake Brawl Fuels BoE Scam Alert
The Bank of England has issued a public warning after AI-generated deepfake images of its governor apparently fighting politician Nigel Farage spread rapidly across X, directing unsuspecting users toward a fraudulent investment scheme.
The fabricated images were crafted to resemble video stills and depicted BoE Governor Andrew Bailey in a physical altercation with Reform Party leader Nigel Farage on the set of BBC's Question Time. In one image, Farage appears to be holding a gun; in another, the two men are being separated by police. The posts contained links to a counterfeit BBC news article promoting a financial scheme that falsely claimed it could convert £250 into £1 million within just 11 weeks.
Governor Bailey responded swiftly, stating that fake advertisements impersonating the Bank of England and other central banks are on the rise. He stressed that these scams are designed to criminally exploit the public — particularly vulnerable individuals — and urged everyone to stay vigilant and report suspicious content so authorities can identify and permanently remove those responsible.

Farage also addressed the incident on X with characteristic wit, acknowledging that while he and Bailey have their differences, he would never take their disagreements quite that far.
Cybersecurity firm Bitdefender has linked the deepfakes to a broader, coordinated global investment scam network. A company spokesperson told The Telegraph that the operation appears connected to Russian-language criminal groups engaged in financially motivated fraud — suggesting this is not an isolated incident but part of an organised, cross-border deception campaign.
The episode highlights a rapidly escalating threat: AI-powered disinformation is no longer just a political concern — it is becoming a direct, financially devastating tool targeting everyday consumers. Experts warn that as deepfake technology becomes more accessible, such scams will grow in both sophistication and scale.
