DeepSeek, a Chinese AI startup, is emerging as a serious competitor to OpenAI, reflecting China’s ambitions to lead the global generative AI space. Launched in December 2024, DeepSeek’s flagship model, DeepSeek V3, has quickly gained recognition for outperforming established models like OpenAI’s GPT-4, Meta’s LLaMA, and Anthropic’s Claude in benchmarks such as coding, mathematical problem-solving, and debugging. Emergence of DeepSeek is a serious threat to American AI dominance.
What sets DeepSeek apart is its low-cost, rapid development model. The company claims to have built DeepSeek V3 in just two months, with an investment of less than $6 million ($5.58 million)—a stark contrast to the reported $100 million OpenAI spent on GPT-4. Despite limited access to advanced GPUs due to U.S. export controls, DeepSeek leveraged Nvidia’s H800 GPUs, considered last-generation chips in the U.S., and optimized them to achieve performance on par with models trained on cutting-edge hardware. This resource-efficient approach showcases DeepSeek’s expertise in model design and algorithmic optimization.
DeepSeek’s use of Test Time Scaling demonstrates how advanced AI models can be developed using widely available, export control-compliant hardware, the company said. Nvidia stated that DeepSeek did not violate U.S. restrictions on advanced chips, countering skepticism about the Chinese startup’s breakthrough. Most of Nvidia’s top-tier products require U.S. licenses, which are rarely granted to Chinese firms.
Following DeepSeek’s announcement, Nvidia’s shares saw a historic plunge, driven by fears that its expensive hardware may become less essential. However, Nvidia emphasized that inference—the process of running AI models—still heavily relies on its products, ensuring continued demand for its GPUs.
The company’s success also underscores the resilience of China’s AI ecosystem. Despite U.S. export restrictions on advanced chips, Chinese firms like DeepSeek have adapted by maximizing available resources and prioritizing innovation. Experts view DeepSeek as China’s rising challenger in the global AI race, representing the nation’s efforts to develop homegrown alternatives to U.S.-dominated AI platforms amidst escalating U.S.-China tech tensions.
DeepSeek’s emergence underscores the intensifying global competition as nations strive for technological supremacy. Nvidia has addressed its historic single-day record loss, the largest ever by any company, following recent market concerns.
