By ensuring only authorized access, the One time password measure strengthens cybersecurity and aligns with best practices.
The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) has assured citizens that the recently introduced updates to the Right to Information (RTI) portal are functioning effectively, following the implementation of a One-Time Password (OTP) feature aimed at enhancing security. These updates, introduced on January 2, 2025, were part of a comprehensive review to improve citizen-centric services and protect sensitive personal information shared in RTI applications.
The DoPT confirmed that the RTI portal updates, including the OTP feature, are operational and user-friendly. The OTP system has been put in place to authenticate users and prevent unauthorized access to personal details. However, concerns were raised about delays in receiving OTPs, particularly from users relying on external email services such as Gmail or Yahoo. The DoPT explained that these delays are typically due to heavy traffic on either the National Informatics Centre (NIC) server or third-party email services, but assured users that OTPs remain valid until used, and they can access their application status as soon as the OTP arrives.
As of January 9, 2025, over 9,700 users have successfully used the OTP system to access RTI statuses, demonstrating the system’s reliability. The department acknowledged that some users found the additional step cumbersome but emphasized that it is a necessary security measure to protect user privacy. The system has undergone rigorous testing to ensure smooth operation.
In response to concerns regarding the accessibility of helpline services, the DoPT reiterated that users can contact the RTI Help Desk at 011-24622461 during office hours for assistance. The department is committed to ensuring transparency and accessibility for all citizens and has pledged to continue monitoring the RTI portal for performance and efficiency.
These recent RTI portal updates are part of a larger effort to modernize digital governance and ensure that the Right to Information Act remains a powerful tool for citizens, while also addressing security concerns in the digital age. The DoPT reassured the public that it will continue working towards the enhancement of citizen services, with a focus on privacy, security, and user satisfaction.
