Meta introduces animated profile pictures, AI-powered photo restyling tools, and dynamic backgrounds for text posts as Facebook steps up efforts to attract younger users and refresh the platform’s visual identity with more interactive, personalised experiences.
Facebook has unveiled a series of artificial intelligence-driven features aimed at making the platform more expressive and visually engaging. The updates introduce animated profile pictures, AI-based image transformations for Stories and Memories, and animated backgrounds for text posts.
The move comes as Meta intensifies efforts to keep Facebook relevant among younger audiences, particularly Gen Z users, who increasingly gravitate toward more visually dynamic social platforms. By integrating AI into creative tools, the company hopes to deliver a more personalised and playful user experience.
Animated profiles and AI restyling
One of the key additions is animated profile pictures, which apply motion effects to static images. Users can make their profile photos appear more lively, with subtle movements and themed effects. Facebook recommends clear, front-facing photos for optimal results, and more animation styles are expected to roll out in the coming months.
The platform is also upgrading its Stories and Memories features with a new AI-powered “Restyle” option. After selecting a photo, users can transform it using text prompts or choose from preset themes such as anime, illustrated, glowing, or ethereal styles. Additional tools allow adjustments to lighting, colour tones, mood, and even background settings, offering a creative refresh to shared content.
Dynamic text posts and broader youth strategy
To further enhance engagement, Facebook is introducing animated backgrounds for text posts. Users can select from a range of moving and static visuals to make their posts more eye-catching. Seasonal themes are also planned as part of future updates.
With more than two billion daily active users, Facebook remains one of the world’s largest social networks. However, competition for younger audiences has intensified. In response, Meta has rolled out design changes, introduced AI-powered tools, and added features such as friends-only feeds and custom display names in Groups.
These latest AI enhancements reflect Facebook’s broader push to modernise its platform while retaining its massive global user base.
