A gang of inter-state cyber fraudsters, who allegedly duped Vardhman Group Chairman Shri Paul Oswal of Rs 7 crore, has been busted by Punjab Police. Seven other members of this gang have been identified and efforts were on to nab them.
All the nine members of the gang belonged to Assam and West Bengal, as per reports quoting Kuldeep Singh Chahal, Police Commissioner, Ludhiana, as saying. Two cyber criminals have been arrested and Rs 5.25 crore have been recovered from them, he said.
The fraudsters reportedly approached Oswal as CBI officials. They also showed him a fake arrest warrant and threatened him with online arrest. Later, the imposters cheated the owner by extorting Rs 7 crore. The massive amount was transferred from various banks belonging to the noted industrialist.
An FIR was lodged on August 31 at Ludhiana’s Cyber Crime Police station under provisions of BNS and IT Act on a complaint filed by SP Oswal. The accused have been identified as Atanoo Choudhary and Anand Kumar Choudhary (both residents of Guwahati in Assam), the Ludhiana police said.
This is the second such incident which has come to light within a week. Earlier, a local industrialist, Rajnish Ahuja, was cheated of Rs 1.01 crore by another group of fraudsters. Ahuja was duped after the fraudsters threatened him with an arrest warrant after claiming that an extortion amount was transferred to his bank account.
