Google has upgraded Chrome’s autofill feature to handle sensitive personal details such as passport numbers and driver’s licences. The update, rolling out globally, aims to enhance convenience while maintaining privacy and data security standards
Google has announced a major enhancement to its Chrome browser, enabling automatic form filling for a wider range of personal details, including passport numbers, driver’s licence information, and vehicle registration data. The new feature builds on Chrome’s existing autofill capabilities, which already support addresses, passwords, and payment details.
The update allows desktop users with enhanced autofill enabled to seamlessly complete fields related to official documents such as passports, vehicle identification numbers (VINs), and licence plates. Google said Chrome’s improved form recognition system will interpret complex formats and adapt to various web standards, making autofill faster and more accurate across diverse online forms.
Privacy and security remain core priorities
Google has emphasised that the feature will function with user consent and strong security safeguards. Personal data will only be saved and used with explicit user permission, and all stored information will be encrypted. Before Chrome automatically enters any sensitive data, users will be required to confirm the action, ensuring privacy and preventing misuse.
The global rollout has already begun across all supported languages, with more document types expected to be added in upcoming updates.
Part of Chrome’s broader AI-powered evolution
This announcement follows a series of Chrome upgrades designed to keep pace with the latest AI-driven browsers. Recent updates include expanded Gemini access for Mac and Windows users in the U.S., agentic AI tools for smarter browsing, an AI-enhanced address bar search mode, and scam-detection capabilities.
Smaller enhancements, such as simplified account switching and automatic disabling of inactive site notifications, reflect Google’s broader effort to make Chrome more intelligent, secure, and user-friendly.
