With its latest update, Google Photos plans to bring retouching tools to selfies, while still trying to do so in a way the brand keeps referring to as “subtle.” Announced on the company’s blog, Google Photos’ image editor now supports touch-up tools that should bring “subtle enhancements” to either selfies or photos of friends. The user can smooth out skin texture, remove blemishes, or brighten the eyes. Each effect has an intensity slider allowing the user to move between extremes.
To use, select a face in a captured image, then select heal, smooth, under eyes, irises, teeth, eyebrows, or lips from the tools list.
The new touch-up tools are gradually rolling out globally in the Google Photos app on Android devices with at least 4 GB RAM and Android 9.0 and up.
As expected, the language in Google’s latest post appears to minimize the potential risks associated with image retouching—particularly in industries like fashion and modeling. This comes at a time when many parents are increasingly concerned about the impact of social media on teenagers, especially after Google lost a lawsuit last month over YouTube’s role in contributing to these concerns.
