The Indian government is said to be extending the existing import management system for imports of certain IT hardware products including laptops and tablets for three months.
The government plans to extend the validity of import authorizations for certain IT hardware products, including laptops and tablets, until September 30, 2024.
Most of these imports come from China. This extension aims to maintain the existing import management system for these products for an additional three months, according to an official source.
As per the official, these imports, which mostly were coming from China, stood at $8.4 billion in 2023-24 against the authorization of about $9.5 billion.
In October of last year, the government implemented an import management system for laptops, personal computers, and other IT hardware to monitor inbound shipments while ensuring market supply remains unaffected. Importers can apply for multiple authorizations, valid until September 30, 2024, covering any number of consignments.
On November 1, 2023, the government approved over 100 applications from companies like Apple, Dell, and Lenovo, allowing them to import IT hardware worth nearly $10 billion on the first day of the new system's implementation.
