IIT Madras is strengthening India's innovation ecosystem with Bharat Ascend, a national initiative aimed at discovering and nurturing promising ideas from beyond the country's established startup hubs.
Led by the IITM Global Research Foundation in partnership with Ideabaaz, a media-integrated startup platform, Bharat Ascend aims to identify 100 high-potential ideas within 365 days. Its focus on Tier II and Tier III cities could bring greater visibility to entrepreneurs who often lack access to established startup networks.
The initiative goes beyond identifying ideas — it aims to build pathways through which promising concepts can progress into prototypes, pilot projects, investable ventures, and globally scalable enterprises, addressing one of India's biggest innovation gaps: turning ideas into commercial reality.
The significance lies in democratizing innovation. India holds tremendous entrepreneurial potential outside major hubs like Bengaluru and Mumbai, but smaller-city innovators often struggle to access mentors, investors, labs, and markets. By combining IIT Madras' research ecosystem with broader startup visibility, Bharat Ascend could create a structured pipeline from Idea to Global Scale.
The initiative also aligns with Viksit Bharat @2047's ambition, since building a developed India requires globally competitive IP and enterprises from across the country — not just startups concentrated in a few cities.
