Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has declared India's ambition to become a global leader in artificial intelligence (AI), mirroring its success in the IT services sector. Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, he emphasized a balanced approach, fostering innovation while implementing necessary regulations.
"India is equipping its youth with AI-ready skills," Vaishnaw said, highlighting initiatives like AI-focused courses in 200 universities. He also emphasized modernizing education through 5G labs and providing advanced semiconductor design tools to educational institutions.
Addressing concerns about AI regulation, Vaishnaw stressed the importance of responsible AI development. "We must tap into the tremendous opportunities of AI while ensuring safety and addressing potential risks," he stated.
The minister highlighted the unified Indian delegation at Davos, showcasing collaboration across states and political lines."This sends a strong message of unity," he remarked.
India's economic growth has garnered global attention, with the country sustaining 6-8% growth while many nations face economic challenges. Vaishnaw attributed this success to India's talent pool and progressive policies, which are attracting global companies to invest and relocate.
Export-led growth is a key focus for India. The government is simplifying tariffs and customs laws to enhance India's position as a global export hub.
Recognizing the challenges posed by misinformation and mistrust, Vaishnaw acknowledged the need for robust safeguards. However, he emphasized that these safeguards should not hinder the transformative potential of AI.
By investing in talent development, fostering innovation, and striking a balance between regulation and growth, India aims to lead the global AI revolution while maintaining its position as a trusted global partner.
