Sam Altman reaffirmed OpenAI’s commitment to India, highlighting partnerships with local firms to develop accessible, effective AI solutions, and announced a visit in September, reflecting the company’s intensified focus on one of its fastest-growing markets
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has expressed strong optimism about India’s potential to become the company’s largest market, surpassing the United States. Currently the company’s second-largest market after the US, India’s rapid adoption and innovative use of artificial intelligence (AI) have impressed Altman, who praised the creativity of Indian users in leveraging AI technologies.
At a recent product launch, OpenAI unveiled GPT-5, its most advanced AI model to date, designed to excel in programming and autonomous task execution. The new model is available in three versions—gpt-5, gpt-5-mini, and gpt-5-nano—allowing developers to prioritize speed, efficiency, or cost based on their specific requirements.
Altman emphasized OpenAI’s commitment to the Indian market, highlighting ongoing collaborations with local partners to tailor AI products that are both effective and affordable for a diverse user base. He also announced plans to visit India in September, signalling the company’s growing focus on the region.
GPT-5: Smarter, faster, adaptive
Described as smarter, faster, and more practical, GPT-5 represents a significant advancement over previous iterations of ChatGPT. According to Altman, it offers insights comparable to PhD-level expertise and surpasses earlier models in areas such as programming, mathematics, writing, healthcare, and visual comprehension. The system can also adjust its responses dynamically, depending on whether the user prioritizes speed or depth in answers.
The GPT-5 update is being rolled out across all user levels, including Free, Plus, Pro, and Team subscriptions, ensuring broad access. Enterprise and educational customers can expect to receive the upgrade within the coming week, further extending the model’s reach in professional and academic settings.
Altman’s comments underscore OpenAI’s strategy to deepen its engagement with India, positioning the country as a vital hub in the global AI landscape.
